So the homie Curly Castro brought it to my attention that he didn't know I finished my Top 5 countdown over at OUTOFPRINTMAG.COM. For this I take full blame and as a corrective measure I'm gonna finish it over here...

Top 7
Eminem has mastered his flow to the point that he can rap on
prettymuch anything, including his own production. I love hearing what
he's gonna do to a track, he just needs to work on his content. At
this point I can count on him to rap about beating up a girl, arguing
with a girl, killing a girl and then beating her up again. Until he
returns to the days of old, I'm gonna hafta hold of on Em.

Top 6
Now anyone that knows me knows full well that I'm a MF DOOM
enthusiast. The wordplay, flow and production is in a realm all by
itself. The references in the rhymes play out like a family guy
episode. A very talented cat who stands as a testament as to what can
be accomplished with the proper level of determination. Dude lost his
brother followed by their record deal, goes into seclusion and
reemerges as a masked villian? I dare you to name someone iller than
that. Even still... *head hung low* he didn't make the top 5. At the
end of the day DOOM is an acquired taste, and he's chosen to keep it
that way. Which I think has been very instrumental in developing his
cult following. He's definitely one of the best doing it but just not
enough to make the cut.

Top 5
Biggie has been a mainstay on every "Top 5" list much like Pac because
he was cut down in his prime. We dream and fantasize about the career
that could have been. But he didn't have enough releases to fairly be
compared to Pac or anyone living for that matter. Biggie is in the top
5 NYC emcee's sure but thats where it stops. The whole "King of New
York" title is what crippled east coast rap. Fans were subjugating
todays emcees to an ideal of what BIG could have become. If your
"King" is dead and the people don't move forward to accept a successor
there goes the kingdom. I'm not gonna spend a whole lot of time on
BIG because a large majority of hip hop fans especially those that
didn't grow up listening to him would like to argue me down for hours
about how much he meant to them and changed their lives. Go put on ya
Dilla t-shirt and kick rocks...

The Roots? neva happened. The same can be said of his verses. One of

its finest. There isn't a an emcee I wouldn't put him up against.

Black Thought Mix

Thursday Mix: Andre 3000
Much like Black Thought you are hard pressed to find a bad verse from
Andre 3000. From the first album Andre has always displayed a lyrical
know how seldom seen from artists 4 albums deep. Looked at as the more
experimental member of the group he's living proof that if you stay in
your lane and make the music you want to make without compromise no
one can do it better than you. As I was recording the mix listening to
the production (that he had a hand in) and the verses it became
evident that he might be the best emcee alive right now.

Lauryn Hill (i'm gonna get crucified for this one...smh) Well besides the fact that she only truly has ONE album, that she didn't even write (check out the lawsuits) resulting in grammys that she didn't earn, now coupled with her recent string of awkward and extortionistic (yep made that one up just now) performances, what is it that makes her hip hop royalty? She's a really good actress... playing a really good rapper... very well. *shrugs* In the absence of any other female emcee whose material is consistently uplifting, liberating and inspiring we have Lauryn... Thats not enough to make my Top 5 though.

...Common ...Electric Circus... need I reeaaaally say more? LOL Okay but seriously his career can not be tainted with that one album. Especially with Be and Finding Forever in his body of work. Common has one of the dopest live shows all types of energy, he's successfully traversed into the acting world. And I dare you to test his freestyle, dude is easily one of the best. So all that having been said, why isn't he in my Top 5. Well he's good, ut he's just not better than the cats that made the cut. And I think he's okay with that. Not necessarily and underachiever but he has let his career slip into cruise control. Kinda like my man Fabolous comfortable with where he is when he could be so much more. I expect a little more from the emcee that gave us I Used To Love H.E.R.

I'll never forget the work he did for Diddy on the Press Play album it was so DOPE! But I gotta tell you the truth he strikes me as an underachiever. Maybe he needs a better label situation. Top 5 Dead or Alive: The Elimination Begins

"See so the 17th was a Saturday... I was working the elimination kinda slipped my mind. Yesterday the 18th I spent a good part of the day djing the Muttaqeen Football League games in West Philly... very dope. Aaaaaaand now its the 19th, so we're 3 days in on the elimination.First one out was kinda of a joke to begin with... Lil Wayne. I only put him on there to appease some of the people that actually think he's worthy of the comparison. C'mon gimme a break! Now that I actually believe he's writing his own material i can give him some credit for his verses. But Top 5? absolutely not.

Next Tupac... hmmmm I feel like alot of people have them on his list because they have Biggie on their lists. Which is truly a mismatch when you look at Pac's body of work. Unfortunately he doesn't make the cut for me, and I feel like he's made some great contributions to hip hop.

And for today... Scarface gets eliminated for prettymuch the same reason Pac did Very notable artist. Just not consistent enough for my Top 5."

So I've been waiting to do this for a while now. Above is 15 emcee's that some would consider the best doing it. Out of those 15, I have 5 that I would consider the best to ever do it. Someone mentioned Nas was missing... (crickets)... chyeaaaaaaaaa Am's not a Nas fan. Anyways as the weeks go by and I get closer and closer to Amday, (my birthday which I celebrate in some fun and hilarious way each year) Sept, 28th, I'm going to eliminate people to reveal my remaining top 5. As we get down to the final 5 I will release a mix of music from that artist to support my arguement. The elimination begins September 17th.

The estimates include income from record sales, touring, digital downloads, films, merchandise sales, endorsements, books and other entertainment ventures; management, agent and attorney fees are not deducted. Earnings are calculated for the period from May 2010 to May 2011 and based on data from Pollstar, Nielsen SoundScan, the Recording Industry Association of America, and individual record labels, as well as interviews with numerous lawyers, media buyers, managers and many of the artists themselves. 1. Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter, $37 million

Hip-hop’s reigning Cash King continues to reap the benefits of a 10-year $150 million Live Nation deal, as well as stakes in the New Jersey Nets, the 40/40 Club chain, ad firm Translation and others. This year marked the first time he out-earned wife Beyonce since their marriage in 2008. 2. Sean "Diddy" Combs, $35 million

Music now accounts for less than 20% of earnings for the artist formerly known as Puff Daddy, thanks to big stakes in clothing lines Sean John and Enyce, record label Bad Boy and marketing firm Blue Flame. But it's his Ciroc vodka deal that led FORBES to estimate his net worth at $475 million this winter.

3. Kanye West, $16 million

The self-proclaimed Louis Vuitton Don returns to the top three for the first time since 2009. His new album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, hit stores in November, earned critical raves and quickly went platinum. His follow-up, Jay-Z collaboration Watch the Throne, debuted on August 8th.

4. Dwayne "Lil Wayne" Carter, $15 million (tie)

The lyricist reportedly wrote his first song at age 8 and signed a record deal with Cash Money a year later. Today he's one of rap's richest, despite serving eight months in jail last year. His latest release, I Am Not A Human Being, made him the first artist since Tupac Shakur to have a No. 1 album while incarcerated.

4. Bryan "Birdman" Williams, $15 million (tie)

The Cash Money chief continues to rake in cash from the label he cofounded, home to fellow Cash Kings Lil Wayne, Drake and Nicki Minaj. Excluded from previous lists because we deemed him more executive than rapper, Birdman was included this year because most of his peers now have a similar job description.

6. Marshall "Eminem" Mathers, $14 million (tie)

Eminem doesn't tour as much as many rappers and his outside business interests are limited, but music alone was enough to blast him back into the upper reaches of the list this year. His album Recovery sold 5.7 million copies worldwide and earned 10 Gramm nominations. Normally non-commercial, he added to his coffers with Super Bowl spots for Lipton and Chrysler.

6. Andre "Dr. Dre" Young, $14 million (tie)

The man who launched the careers of fellow Cash Kings including Snoop Dogg, Eminem and 50 Cent keeps bringing in cash—namely from producer fees and Beats by Dre, his lucrative headphone venture with Interscope chief Jimmy Iovine.

6. Calvin "Snoop Dogg" Broadus, $14 million (tie)

The ageless wonder of the West Coast turned in another strong year, boosted by new album Doggumentary, heavy touring and endorsements with companies from Metro PCS to Pepsi Max. Icing on the proverbial cake: A verse on Katy Perry’s smash hit “California Gurls.”

9. Aliuane "Akon" Thiam, $13 million

The Senegalese-American singer-songwriter-producer extraordinaire caked up on a string of international concerts from Australia to Zimbabwe, a lucrative World Cup spot with Pepsi, a host of business ventures and hit song “I Just Had Sex,” which has garnered over 115 million YouTube views since its December debut. 10. Christopher "Ludacris" Bridges, $12 million

The self-proclaimed Mouth of the South makes money from much more than just music. This year, he earned big on movie roles including Fast Five, No Strings Attached and New Year’s Eve, as well as endorsements with Tag body spray and Trojan condoms. He also struck partnership deals to launch Soul By Ludacris headphones and a cognac called Conjure.

11. Cameron "Wiz Khalifa" Thomaz, $11 million (tie)

Riding high off hit single “Black and Yellow,” Pittsburgh’s most famous rapper has been touring nonstop, playing well over 100 shows in the past 12 months. 11. Aubrey "Drake" Graham, $11 million (tie)

His debut Thank Me Later debuted last fall and quickly went platinum; another record is in the works. Touring and endorsements generate plenty of cash in the meantime: he shills for Kodak and Coca-Cola’s Sprite, and even has a Drake-emblazoned Virgin America airplane already in the sky.

13. Pharrell Williams, $10 million

The Virginia-born super-producer continues to earn industry-leading production fees even while touring and releasing albums with his funk-rock group N.E.R.D. Not included in this year’s tally: proceeds from the recent licensing deal struck between his Billionaire Boys Club clothing line and Jay-Z’s Rocawear.

14. Timothy "Timbaland" Mosley, $7 million

The superstar beat-maker had something of a quiet period in between album cycles, leading to a steep earnings drop from last year. But he still makes a killing by peddling his production talents and should earn more in the coming year--his third solo album, Shock Value III, is scheduled for release later this fall.

15. Kasseem "Swizz Beatz" Dean, $6.5 million (tie)

It’s been more than a decade since Swizz burst onto the scene by producing DMX’s “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem” at age 16; since then, he’s added hundreds of credits to his catalog, most recently on Jay-Z and Kanye West’s Watch The Throne. He tied the knot with singer Alicia Keys last summer and recently announced a lucrative partnership with Reebok.

15. Onika "Nicki Minaj" Maraj, $6.5 million (tie)

Born in Trinidad and Tobago, Nicki Minaj grew up in Queens and is now the first female rapper to grace our Hip-Hop Cash Kings list. Her debut Pink Friday went platinum shortly after its launch this fall, and she’s not shy about her earnings: on Kanye West’s “Monster,” she boasts that she gets $50,000 for her guest verses.

17. William "Rick Ross" Roberts, $6 million (tie)

The rotund rhymester makes his third-straight Cash Kings appearance on the strength of solid album sales and touring. His latest, Teflon Don, was certified gold; he’s been supporting it by hitting the road with Lil Wayne and performing lucrative gigs on his own.

17. Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, $6 million (tie)

Though he holds the record for the highest single-year earnings of any Cash King—$150 million in 2008, fueled by a nine-figure Vitamin Water windfall—50’s fortunes have fallen of late. But he still earns from his G-Unit empire, as well as acting roles, concerts and recorded music, most notably a verse on Michael Jackson’s posthumous album.

17. Armando "Pitbull" Perez, $6 million (tie)

Better known by his stage name, Armando Christian Perez is one of the most prolific artists on our list, releasing two albums and performing 50-plus shows over the past 12 months. But it’s his endorsement deals that really set him apart; he earned seven figures for a deal with Kodak this year.

20. Faheem "T-Pain" Najm, $5 million (tie)

AutoTune may be dead, but T-Pain’s earnings are alive and well. The “I’m On A Boat” crooner has racked up over 60 guest appearances since the beginning of 2010. He also beefs up his bank account with concerts and side ventures like the I Am T-Pain iPhone app.

20. Bobby "B.o.B" Simmons, Jr., $5 million (tie)

The 22-year-old rapper-singer-songwriter burst onto the scene in 2010 with the smash hit “Nothin’ on You,” featuring Bruno Mars. The duo performed the song at the Grammys, helping to fuel sales of B.o.B’s first album, The Adventures of Bobby Ray. Touring, guest appearances and a viral Adidas commercial boosted him to his Cash Kings debut.

Thanks to Matt over a Books A Milliion, I now know that there is a bit more to the Captain America

origin story. Unbeknownst to me Marvel comics released a 7 part miniseries chronicling the beginning of the super soldier program and how it involved experimentation on African Americans before perfecting the formula for use by Steve Rodgers.
Before Steve there was Isaiah Bradley the only survivor from his "test group". We learned that these original super soldiers carried out some of the early mission and secured victories that Steve was later given the credit for. Locked into battle with Nazi Germany during WW2 America just wasn't ready for a black superhero yet. I'm not gonna give you to much more. I don't wanna spoil the story for you.

The project has a very interesting mix to it, or lack there of depending on how you look at it. One thing is for sure there was no standard recording booth involved with some of these tracks. That seems to change halfway through the album. Does it take away from the beats and rhymes? Absolutely not, but it does decrease the chances of me spinning this on a real sound system at an event... YUP!!
On "whatifiwas" Blu opens up the album making it his business to remind you why he's looked at as one of the most lyrically gifted spitters out right now...

Aight man listen i'm not gonna dig back into this album to try and find more dope things to say about it. Blu is a dope artist and apparently it's when he wants to be... #nuffsaid.

So last night, or rather this morning, I crashed into my pillow at almost 3am only to wake up 2hrs later, hop on the 6am train to pick up the girls from the sitter. Got off the train and into a cab only to head right back to station after picking up Kay and Bri. Have breakfast with them and then off to school for them and off to work for me. Oh yea this was definitely gonna be a double 5hr energy drink day. Whew! But there was this one moment while we were in the back of the cab? The driver was surfing through the stations and Lucy Pearl's "Dance Tonite" was on. Kaylin heard a couple seconds and started singing along, as the driver changed the station. So for once its the dj making the request. "Hey can you turn back to that, my daughters love that song?" As it comes back on the girls start rocking back and forth singing along as the morning sun bounced off their beautiful faces.

At that exact moment I felt totally rejuvenated and leaned over collected my good morning kisses. As I fell back into my seat and exhaled I think to myself "this is what its all about..."

Purple Tape Review: Society Park "The New Hope"

I'm trying so very hard to write an unbiased review for Society Parks "The New Hope", but because of their excellent track record I'm forced to have nothing but high expectations for their releases. Once again I'm impressed.

Anyone that knows me is well aware that I'm by no means a religious man, spiritual yes, but definitely not religious. Society Park would be classified as a Christian Rap Group, much like Wu-tang could be classified as a 5 Percenter Rap Group. But seeing how this is the U.S. isn't safe to assume the majority of our rap artists are christians?

*flips to BET to count iced out crosses and jesus pieces*

Yea I thought so. The difference with SP(Society Park) is that their beliefs don't take a back seat to anything else. Easily the best Christian/Spiritual Rap Group since The Boogiemonsters. The secret to their winning formula is that they are great emcee's first and foremost. Society Park is comprised of Chances R (emcee) and Who I Am (emcee/producer). The New Hope is their 6th release collectively and it takes me right back to the first time I heard them. The New Hope drops in a seemingly trying time for traditional hip hop fans that can't seem to find themselves amongst some of todays avant garde releases like Tyler the Creators "GOBLIN" and Lil B's "I Am Gay". Not to mention the disappointing "Lasers" from Lupe Fiasco. For those hearing of SP for the first time, I feel like this is a very balanced representation of who this duo is and always intends to be. A very dope testament to their beliefs, hip hop evangelism at it's best.

The stand out tracks Gave it All To You, Around Here feat. Eshon Burgundy, My God, My City, Rush, Standing In Hope. On Lies and Crowded the brothers tackle social issues both on a local and national scale. Drama showcases Chances humorous yet poignant story telling abilities. The production is a about as soulful as it gets. Who I Am shoulders the bulk of the production which is sonic earcandy. Then they reach out to K Beats and even some live instrumentation to round off the project. Listen I'm not gonna go on and on about this project. Just make sure you're at the release tonite!

Purple Tape Review: Pharoahe Monch "W.A.R. (We Are Renegades)"

The album serves as a transmission from a post apocalyptic future... I know what your thinking. I mean I thought the exact same thing, overused movie concept therefore its bound to be wack. I was pleasantly suprised. I feel like this album is much more cohesive because of the concept. Standout tracks include "Clap", "Let My People Go", "Shine" feat. the lil homie Mela Machinko, "Black Hand Side feat. Styles P & Phonte", "Still Standing" feat. Jill Scott, and Evolve. Evolve is especially dope for me as Pharoahe reworks his classic verse from De La Soul's: Mosaic Thump "Ghost Weed" skit. It sounded just as good as it did 10yrs ago.

The production is very solid and most importantly fits into the staging set by Idris Elba's soldier from the year 2023 intro. With contributions from Exile, Marco Polo, Diamond D, and M-Phazes, amongst others I would feel totally comfortable purchasing this album on vinyl... cuz it's good. Much love to artists from the 90's still releasing relevant music good enough to spend money on... Unlike that horrible LOTUG Album I bought a while back. Sidenote: Please, Please, Please do not release songs or projects talking about how real hip hop is dead and todays music isn't as good as back in the day. I promise you from the depths of my soul I will spread word of my disappointment.

After I listened to the first track I remember a feeling of dread washing over me, I later revealed to a colleague what my concerns were. I've reviewed, critiqued and gave feedback on a great deal of indie music and the formula usually goes like this. If I'm impressed at all with the first track the album is usually okay. If I REALLY like the first track the rest of the album is tridash... Twan D aka Antwan Davis has broken that rule.

So at this point I'm on my fifth listen... It's safe to say that I'm... AMpressed? (Austin Powers eyebrow) Antwan's beat selection keeps me comfortably rooted in my eastcoast sensibilities. Understand that because this is music, production is key. If the production isn't captivating or creating the proper soundscape you've successfully wasted studio time on top of creating trash. With production from Wes Manchild, Hank McCoy and Madface Productions Antwan Davis' "Beyond The Music" is a gem all the way around. Antwan's flow makes the story telling that much easier to listen to. My personal fav's include the intro/title track, Shut It Down, Rock The Crowd, Feel So Good, Come On Get It, TakeOver, and without a doubt Therapy.

In the 90's you could pick up just about any new hip hop album without hearing a single or seeing a video and be satisfied. Today is quite the opposite, we're saturated with campaigns promoting horrible albums. I applaud the efforts of independent artists like Antwan that take the time to truly understand their audience and make the music that will reach them. I don't skip a single track on the album, its organized perfectly to take you through its intended moods. It's a free download not to get it would be like cheating yourself. I'll go as far as to suggest that you pay him when you see him! LOL

Exactly one year ago (February 2010) I made the early and somewhat bold statement that Sade’s
album “Soldier of Love” was the best of the year. I come to you today, willing to take the risk and bring
another proclamation. Adele’s sophomore album, 21 is the best album of 2011, hands down. Yes, I’m
well aware it’s February, thanks for the smirk though.

A broken heart isn’t something you can really accurately convey in words. You know it usually turns into
something else, like anger or muffled misunderstood words through sobs and hiccups. Or so I thought.
I like to figure myself a human jukebox of sorts. I can always find a song for the occasion, hell, I can find
a lyric that fits in most every conversation I have. So you can imagine at first listen to these lyrics I was
floored. How in the world did she precisely describe my entire last relationship without making me want
to slit my wrists?!

It’s not fair to call this a break up album, it’s only fitting to say, this is a relationship album. Sure
everyone who’s opened their mouth and belted a ballad for the masses, has sung of love gained or lost,
but when’s the last time you listened to an album in its entirety and thought to yourself, damn, how did
she take every emotion wrapped around my soul, put her pen to paper and so eloquently put each and
every feeling I’ve ever felt into a song? No really, take this time to think about it, I’ll wait…..

Right, you haven’t, until now. This album is in fact, the rollercoaster ride that is a relationship. The ups,
the downs, the begging, the sorrow, the bitterness, the love, the reasoning, the change, the shift, the
bright light at the end of the tunnel, the moment that you realize that the person who played your heart
to the beat, wasn’t worth a single tear you cried, the self confidence, the assurance that you are, and
will always be the one they lost, not the other way around. The resurrection of the you, before the “we.”

Now, there are no standard pop singles, no dance tracks for shaking your ass to, and honestly no men
bashing high five your friends “Mmmm Hmmm giiiiiirl” songs here. But make no mistake, you will, in
this album, find an anthem. For as much emotion, soul and heartache that this album articulates, this
isn’t a sit and sulk in the tub with a glass of wine, cry a little and get more depressed kind of record.
Because with the broken heart comes a brand spankin’ new one, ready for a new venture, sans baggage.
Oh! Silly me, I’ve yet to mention the voice that these lyrics come with. The chill giving, soul stirring,
bring you to your knees voice that guides you through this journey is another reason you don’t slip into
deep darkness. Simply put, you just can’t. The power behind it, the attention it commands, with silky
ease, makes you know your knees won’t be weak for too long, and you will, set fire to the rain yet again.

I was going to list what I deemed to be the most appropriate quotes from 21 but realized, I was close
to typing out the album, but more importantly, this work wholeheartedly speaks for itself. And since no
one listed out their favorites before I took the plunge, it’s only right you find your own moments within
this voyage. If this aint love, then what is?

So I was in my fav pizza shop back in Chester and came across some bootlegs. Now this is nothing strange bootlegs are everywhere. In this day and age artists guage their marketing on how soon the project leaks. When the Stimulus Package hit the net me and every dj/music lover were ON IT. The promo and packaging for this album made it quite the collectors item. Though we all downloaded it I knew I had to buy it. Lemme take a quick second to address this so theirs no confusion.

As a dj we get music sent to us ahead of schedule to test it, and if it doesn't come soon enough we go get it. But as a consumer it's it's good... then I'm BUYING IT. So back to the story. I noticed the above pictured bootleg next to the register and I'm gonna be quite honest. Having worked with Free this kinda stung when I saw it. But that feeling was quickly erased by the bewilderment in seeing that a "dj" put his name on it? LOL ummm what?!? Not a good look my man... Not gonna be bumping that on the ave. Which is prettymuch how I feel about half the album. Simply put, its a female rap album crafted primarily for her large female fanbase. Smart move. I like the overrall feel of the project production wise. Its very cohesive and doesn't fall prey to the whole pick a producer match it up with a feat and make a bunch of singles sensibility.

                   My favorite tracks on the album are based primarily on her verses. Roman's revenge, Did It On Em, Moment 4 Life and Here I Am. In my opinion she's proved that she not scared of anybody and she's held her own in the company of some of my favorite spitters. Check It Out is the single Massive Attack shoulda been. Wil I Am did his thing walking her through what has become the proven successful BEP formula. I mean tell me you couldn't hear Fergie in place of Nicki?

                   In closing its a very solid release for its intended audience. Nicki's contribution to rap and her influence on young chics in the hood is refreshing. Is she responsible for overtly sexual overtones in rap music on a whole? Nope but she is as responsible for these girls adopting harajuku fashion and practicing their english accents as Lupe was responsible for skateboard sales. And I'm okay with that.

   Rapper ingredient #1: Confidence. Everyone in the world is attracted to confidence. From the board room to the booth, it’s needed to get ahead in life. By title alone the first track “I Am The Best” Nicki Minaj takes a few steps past confident and tip toes on cocky, which I’m all for… when there’s major backup to warrant such cockiness (cough cough Kanye West cough cough). “Everything I tried to teach em/ they gone see it in time/Tell them bitches get a stick/ I’m done leading the blind.” 2008 says whaaat?

             Rapper Ingredient #2: Beef. (Thanks a lot 50 cent) It’s almost imperative these days to be beefin’ with someone, and if your diss track has enough roasting on there, you might just win. On Roman’s Revenge Nicki goes hard, “look at my show footage how these girls spazzin/So fuck I look like giving it back to has been” Ouch! That would illicit an all out oooooh and aaaaaah from a crowd, but then she follows with “I’m a bitch/I’m a cunt/and I’ll kick that ho/punt” Uh. What?

             Rapper Ingredient #3: Love Songs. Womp Womp. I see right through this song and refuse to quote it. But thumbs up to the tweeners that can’t believe she just said everything you’ve been thinking for ‘like oh my god 2 weeks of this crazy long relationship’. Gag me with a spoon.

               I should take this moment to be all the way truthful with you folks, I am not a Minaj fan, but there was definitely something in me that wanted this album to prove me wrong. I’m no hater, love all types of music, and most importantly want to heart every lady rapper that throws her wig in the ring. I will however never trust a big butt and a smile or cosign something that doesn’t deserve my stamp.

               Many people that dislike Minaj say it’s because she’s a formula, she’s confused, she’s weak… Well I can wholeheartedly say I have nothing against formulas, or marketing strategies, hell, I love them. Proven ways to make an artist blow, yes please, and thank you. But as a music and artist lover, I find Minaj a hard pill to swallow. Mainly for the fact of Kanye like cockiness with the resume of, well a rookie. Mixtapes, features and major artist co-signs is enough to get you a following, but dope rhymes and a touch of humility will get you longevity. You can’t claim to be original when you’ve taken the styles of 3 majorly known artists to come up with your look, and you certainly can’t claim to be the best when in fact you’re the only femcee making music right now. If the game were flooded with lady rappers right now, I’m not so sure we’d be hearing so much about or from Minaj. I applaud her for her; I’ll try it all, you WILL pay attention to me attitude, the fact that she writes her own music, and has quite the hand in the business end. My applause stops there.

The Will.I.Am produced/featured song Check It Out should have never made the album. The song is terrible squared because it sampled such a horrific song. There’s a huge difference between quirky and junk. This song doesn’t walk the line, it dives right in. Moment For Life feat. Drake and Blazin’ feat Kanye are my favs, and if I were a part of her team these would have been her leading singles. But I can’t say it’s because she’s done something clever, “I’m on a different type of high/heroin/ put on my cape and hit the sky/heroin” yaaaay, standing ovation for you wrote a double entendre! So close, yet so far. She doesn’t shine against either Drake or Kanye, but that’s to be expected. She definitely holds her own craziness next to Eminem on Roman’s Revenge, but they’re both in their alter egos, so eh.

So let’s get to the thick of it… if you’re a Nicki Minaj fan, you’ll love this album. Why? Because you either aren’t listening or her body is what you’re the real fan (I’m not mad at you). If you’re a skeptic, wait it out for album number 2 in hopes that she “grows as an artist” cause this bubble gum all pink everything is about as cool as a dead toe nail on the verge of falling off. Get it over with already!

Last night's Complex & EA Sports event at UBIQ was LIVE! Complex graced the event's guests with free copies of their latest issue with Kid Cudi & Nicki Minaj on the cover and Vitamin Water kept everyone hydrated. Philadelphia 76er's Jrue Holiday was in the building testing his skills on the new EA Sports NBA Jam, while DJ Ambush started to warm things up on the 1's and 2's. The mastermind behind the evening, Set Free, could be seen upstairs and downstairs weaving in and out of people working hard to keep the evening's events flowing for all party goers. And that he did. First, by getting Young Chris in the building and on the sticks against Jrue Holiday for alittle one on one NBA Jam session. Then, Freeway came through the crowd mic in hand getting the crowd ready for what he was about to turn the evening into with his high energy flow while Jrue and Chris traded dunk for dunk. Peedi Crakk showed up and the night went from celebrating the release of NBA Jam to a showcase of Philadelphia Hip Hop. DJ Ambush kept the three rhyme sayers on their toes with his beat juggling of hip hop's classics. The crowd was vibing to the unique sound of each rhyme sayer, the sounds that have always set them and Philly apart in a crowded rap game. As break dancers got busy to my left, Gilbere Forte' entered from the right joining the session in progress. Last night's party at UBIQ made it clear Philadelphia rap is once again poised for a take over. DJ Ambush continued to kill it as The Nuthouse, Chill Moody and others did their things on the mic to close the night out. These children have encountered hardships and obstacles most people would be broken by, but still they move forward. Pushing past the rubble filled streets and bombed out building while armed soldiers stand on guard. This scene is totally different from anything in CA/NY and make getting chased out of Love Park by cops seem trivial. Skating is new to the region of Kabul and while the government issues haven't changed, it is good to see something like skateboarding making a impact on the children's lives. Can skateboarding be a gateway to a new line of thinkers in a country deep rooted and stuck in their past? Either way, the effect skating has already had is big enough for these children.

Back in '02 I went to the Electric Factory to see Big Daddy Kane, Jurassic 5 and The Beatnuts as the headliners. JuJu was sick and we found out at the doors they were not performing. We almost got our tickets refunded because The Beatnuts were the ones we really wanted to see, but we went in anyways. In the end, Big Daddy Kane killed it and Jurassic Five put on a tremendous live show. Still haven't seen The Beatnuts live though....

Self express is king! When it comes to Hockey, the goalie mask is used, first and foremost, to protect the face, and secondly to express who the goalie is with airbrushed images depicting loyalty to their city and team.

Gerry Cheevers was the first to use this goalie mask for more than just protection. One day at practice, Gerry was struck in the face by the puck. Being a guy who always looked for a way out of practicing, he immediately left the ice and went to the locker room. His coach found him there not hurt, but smoking a cig and having a beer. He was ordered to get back out to practice. This incident spurred Gerry's team trainer to paint stitch marks on the mask every time Gerry was hit in the face by the puck. And just like that, goalie masks were never again a boring piece of plain plastic.

Pictured above is my main man, Dennis Smyth. Born in Philly, educated at RIT's school of art, and now back in Philly perfecting his craft. Dennis expresses himself artistically through various mediums, one of the many being tattooing. He works at Tattoo Alley in Horsham, PA (quick ride from Philly). Earlier this week, he did another piece for me (piece number four). The outcome totally blew away my imagery. Dennis is extremely talented and tats with a light hand. Last week was a sad time for technology, seeing two icons come to an end, the Sony Walkman (1979-2010) & Panasonic SL-1200MK6 Turntable (1970-2010. Other models may stay in production).

Way before the iPod, Walkman's were crucial on road trips big or small. If you stepped out the door, you had a Walkman on. My coat pockets were always laced with cassettes, ready to assist whatever mood I was in. Unfortunately, times have changed and there is no place in this unforgiving world for cassettes and the Sony Walkman. Thanks for the memories.

As for the Panasonic Technics, what can you say? Shame on Panasonic for creating such a top quality reliable product, who never seemed the need to be replaced, therefore, resulting in lower sales numbers. You were done in by the perfection of Panasonic's craftsmanship laid out for you.

Lil Wayne got out of jail today...Did it ever really seem like he was gone? I mean, minus hearing the almost weekly news of soon-to-be Lil Wayne baby mama's popping up and minor law infractions, Lil Wayne stayed in heavy rotation. Credit him and his team's tireless work ethic for putting together a brilliant plan of action to be unleashed during his time away. Drake & Nicki Minaj took over as the Young Money king & queen, with Wayne being featured on countless songs. On top of the features and music videos, he even found time to put together a chart topping album. The album had a perfectly timed release date to build up enough excitement before he was to be released from jail. A welcome home tour can't be too far away. Love him or hate him, Wayne has found longevity by breaking out of the standard southern rap one or two album career by not shying away from reinventing his style. Welcome home Weezy.
